Grandma

NINGMASAI SHONGJAN

Born in 1910 at Tuinem Village (now, Teinem Village), Ukhrul District. She was one of the first Christian Convert of Tuinem among the Tangkhul Naga Tribe. Baptized in 1930 by William Pettigrew (The 1st American missionary in Manipur State, one of the 1st in North East India). She was taught and trained by Mrs. Pettigrew in Kangpokpi Mission School Manipur. Later, she set up her own school at Teinem village (Nightschool) and weaving school for the villagers and the Tangkhul. Apart from her teaching, preaching the Gospel, she also set up separate Girls Hostel; Almost all the women Tangkhul from all sides attended the weaving school including some Kukis). She was awarded by the GoM for her dedication towards the upliftment and nourishment of the women in the society. She was one of the first-ever women to compete amongst the man dominated society. 

Which was also recognized nationally, by the central government. She is the first woman among the Tangkhul to attended the leadership meeting at Capital, New Delhi organized by the government of India.
She was known by her various activities particularly social worker as- Founder of TBCWS, WTNBAWS, MBC, Tangkhul Women, and the pioneer of TKS, MCWS, CBCNEI, and the 1st missionary in the proposed Sardar Hills.!
